Enhancing Parent Engagement for Student Success

September 2021 | California Association of African-American Superintendents and Administrators

This field guide from the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence is designed to prepare educators to more effectively engage parents. The field guide includes excerpts from interviews with students, parents, and teachers; professional learning experiences accompanied by scaffolded questions and written responses; “Reflections and Applications” to allow educators the opportunity to reflect on the Field Guide and its applications for their context; videotaped excerpts from the “Advancing Equity in an Era of Crisis” webinar; and recommendations of additional resources related to post-COVID-19 education. This guide outlines the importance of elevating the roles both teachers and parents can play in student achievement, and provides examples of effective parent engagement, including two-way communication, parent-led school events, regular parent and school meetings to support decision-making, and having a designated parent room with resources for families. The guide is an effective resource for teachers, school administrators, and teacher educators considering how to engage parents as partners more effectively.
