Engaging Families in Out-of-School Time Programs Toolkit
This family-engagement toolkit in the National Association for Families, School, and Community Engagement resource library helps school programs involve families in the education of their students. The existing literature indicates that family engagement in after-school programs increases family involvement and improves the relationship between family and child. To help implement family engagement tools, the kit starts with a checklist to help programs pinpoint what stage they are at with family engagement. More specifically, the checklist helps programs see how they currently communicate with families and support their development as parent leaders. Next, the Family Engagement Action Plan helps schools organize programs. The Family Communication Log then helps keep track of communications with families. In addition to the resources above, the toolkit provides related strategies, tips, and publications. These are all valuable to leaders and teachers looking to promote family engagement in their students’ education.
