Emergent Bilingual Learners Syllabus

The High Tech High Graduate School of Education (GSE) supports teachers, educational leaders, and school founders in reimagining schools with a focus on equity, deeper learning and shared leadership. This document is the syllabus for their course entitled “Preservice: Emergent Bilingual Learners Online Course”. The course is designed to introduce teacher candidates to the theory, strategies and practice of understanding, planning for and meeting the unique needs of Emergent Bilingual Learners in a Project Based Learning environment; the syllabus includes a robust list of readings and online resources. Through six facilitated modules, teacher candidates will explore the social, emotional, and instructional needs that define the growing Emergent Bilingual Learner population in the United States. Teacher candidates will learn about relevant theory and practice that supports Emergent Bilingual Learners' development and provides access to the core academic curriculum. Course topics covered include equity, history, linguistic development, formative and summative assessments and more.
