Ecosystems of Policy And Practice That Develop and Support Principals

January 2023 | Wallace Foundation

In this webinar, Paul Manna, Director of Public Policy and the Hyman Distinguished University Professor of Government at William & Mary University, shares reflections on a new, emerging approach to developing policies to support principals through a collaboration of state policymakers, university principal preparation programs, districts, and other actors. Manna’s presentation draws on his report, States as Leaders, Followers and Partners which distills broad lessons from two recent Wallace Foundation efforts that mobilized partnerships to support principals. Following Manna’s presentation, three leaders representing the university, state and district perspectives describe this approach from their vantage points.

  • Carol Johnson Dean, consultant to the Minnesota ESSA Leadership Learning Community and former superintendent of school districts in Boston, Memphis, and Minneapolis
  • Richard M. Gonzales, associate professor in residence and director of education leadership preparation programs at the Neag School of Education, University of Connecticut
  • Ebony Love, director of Educator Preparation Program continuous improvement for the Texas Education Agency
  • Sheila Smith-Anderson, district leadership consultant and former director of leadership development at St. Louis Public Schools
