Deeper Learning in Secondary Science Syllabus

Jenny Bourassa
January 2023 | High Tech High

This syllabus from the High Tech High Graduate School of Education is designed to support teacher candidates in developing the foundations of effective secondary science instructional practice. The syllabus highlights goals aligned with principles of deeper learning, including facilitating positive relationships between students, their peers, and their work; teaching candidates to learn how to plan, facilitate, and reflect on high-cognitive-demand instructional activities which engage all students in developing discipline-specific knowledge, skills, and understandings; and how to use a range of assessment techniques to tailor instruction to students’ needs, assets, and emerging understandings. Assignments include course readings; “Put It to Practice” assignments, which take place within the context of teaching fieldwork; and discussion posts that encourage candidates to reflect on their and their classmates’ learning.
