Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Pedagogy Framework
This framework from the Highlander Institute (now Throughline Learning) assists teachers, administrators, policymakers, and students with identifying the specific practices and competencies that make up culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy (CSRP). Grounded in research, neuroscience, and a body of work by authors including Geneva Gay, Zaretta Hammond, Gloria Ladson-Billings, and others, the framework identifies four domains of practice that enable teachers and students to disrupt inequitable systems and create relevant learning environments. The four domains are: (1) awareness, (2) community building , (3) cognitive development, and (4) critical consciousness. Within each domain, the framework identifies CSRP-aligned practices for both teachers and students. This framework would be useful for teachers, students, administrators, and researchers seeking to understand and assess CSRP.
