Concerned About Teacher Retention in Your District? Mitigate the Turnover Cycle by Supporting Your Principals
This research article from Education Resource Strategies (ERS) reports findings from an analysis of five years of employment data from six large, urban school districts. The research showed that when a principal leaves a school, teacher turnover rates are higher and the relationship between principal and teacher attrition is strongest in schools with high student needs. The article notes that half of principals who leave their school are moving to another position within a district, and so district leaders can impact the turnover of principals and teachers by focusing on retaining principals. Suggestions to boost principal retention include ensuring the principal workload is manageable, providing principals with flexibility in their schools, positioning principal supervisors to fill the gap between school and district, and offering competitive, differentiated compensation.
