Collaborating on University Principal Preparation Program Redesign: A Summary of Findings for University Principal Preparation Program Providers
This report from RAND studied seven universities that were funded to redesign their principal preparation programs based on research-supported practices. The University Principal Preparation Initiative (UPPI) was a five-year study that revealed a few key findings for other programs. UPPI teams successfully redesigned program components, enhanced curriculum coherence, made clinical experiences more authentic, and strengthened cohort use. Collaboration with districts led to better recruitment, and partnerships involving universities, school districts, and state organizations played a crucial role. The redesign process involved continuous improvement, self-assessments, and logic models. Challenges included faculty reluctance to shift courses to practical orientations, time constraints, turnover, and expanding partnerships. Recommendations include selecting committed district partners, evaluating program strengths and gaps, developing a common vision, committing to curriculum changes, preparing for challenges, and building data collection systems for ongoing improvement.
