Challenging Behavior and Expulsion from Childcare
This journal article from Zero to Three examines the reasons behind high expulsion rates among preschool students and the connection to social and emotional learning implementation. The report finds that behavior challenges related to noncompliance were the leading cause of expulsions. To further understand this relationship, the report describes an experiment where learning centers were provided with early childhood mental health consultants to help build early educators’ capacity to deal with challenging behavior. The authors outline the common characteristics of children at risk for expulsion, as well as the common characteristics of programs that may exacerbate challenging behaviors. The article includes a detailed list of specific strategies recommended for use with teachers to help them address challenging behaviors.
