This brief from the Society for Research in Child Development examines the estimated long-term effects of shelter-in-place orders on LGBTQ+ students during the COVID-19 pandemic. It argues that schools play a pivotal role in meeting the social and emotional needs of LGBTQ+ students, and virtual school combined with limited access to community resources has forced some LGBTQ+ students into environments where they do not feel safe and secure. The report notes that housing instability among students has traditionally impacted the LGBTQ+ community more often and that the pandemic exacerbated this issue. The brief also notes that LGBTQ+ students may not have been “out of the closet” to their families, and the shelter-in-place orders may have forced them to hide their identities for long periods of time, causing deep emotional distress. This brief also provides a few solutions, namely that schools should reaffirm their commitment to equity, that schools should safeguard the confidentiality of their LGBTQ+ students, and that schools should encourage the formation of LGBTQ+ clubs.
