Addressing Complex Challenges in Educator Development: The Houston Region’s Collaborative Approach
This brief from The University-School Partnerships for the Renewal of Educator Preparation (US PREP) describes the creation and work of a community of practice in Houston, created to enhance student outcomes and increase educational excellence in the face of a growing trend of fast-track online teacher preparation programs in Texas. The community of practice includes four working groups, each dedicated to an area of focus: supporting uncertified teachers in enrolling in and completing high-quality preparation programs, training mentor teachers to support novice teachers effectively, developing and expanding teacher residency and apprenticeship models, and addressing the early pipeline from high school to community college to ensure a smooth transition in educator preparation programs. Those engaged in educator preparation programs considering similar ways to engage in improving the pathway as a whole may find this brief useful.
