What Matters and for Whom? Exploring Characteristics of Teacher Residency Programs and Their Relationship to Participant Perceptions
This research report identifies four teacher residency program (TRP) structures that provide salient support to participants. These structures include TRPs: (1) providing extended clinical experience that lasts a year or longer; (2) localizing individual support networks for participants to work closely with; (3) offering programmatic training in which participants are able to connect coursework, professional development, and practice; and (4) teaching practical professional knowledge, such as content, pedagogical, and general professional knowledge. While many resources investigating TRPs focus on one program, this report analyzed data from over 39 TRPs. Survey responses from TRP residents, graduates, mentors, and administrators were analyzed and collectively echoed the significance of providing these structures. Additionally, the report establishes a preliminary method of characterizing different types of TRPs. This resource may be helpful to policymakers interested in TRP investment and to teacher preparation practitioners seeking to best support candidates.
