Using the Science of Reading to Improve Literacy Instruction for English Learners Video
This 60-minute webinar from CORE Learning explores how phonics-based literacy instruction (the Science of Reading) can support English learners (ELs) in developing their reading and writing abilities. The webinar explains the major components of the Science of Reading (phonemic awareness, letter-sounds, decoding, fluency, and comprehension). Within this framework, it explains how each of the skills is necessary for both English proficient and English learner students. However, the webinar acknowledges the unique differences between English proficient and English learner students in that ELs are learning how to listen and speak a new language while learning how to read and write in that new language. With that added challenge, the speaker notes that strategic use of an EL’s first language (L1) is acceptable and useful in developing literacy skills. This webinar calls for educators to be informed about the different approaches to literacy instruction that may be beneficial to ELs.
