April 2025 | University of California, Los Angeles, Teaching and Learning Center

This guide, published by UCLA’s Teaching and Learning Center, provides a comprehensive overview of how generative AI works, the possibilities of using GenAI in teaching and learning, and its drawbacks. Throughout, it provides citations to evidence-based research, resources, and classroom tools throughout, including discussion questions about students’ use of AI and examples of syllabus statements. It encourages educators to approach discussions about GenAI in the classroom with knowledge about its use, potential, and drawbacks. Reflective tools such as sample student surveys and model syllabus policies further support educators with creating and communicating GenAI policies in the classroom. The guide recommends that educators continuously revisit their learning goals and activities as well as ensure equity and accessibility to GenAI tools as the technology continues to evolve.
