Teen and Young Adult Perspectives on Generative AI
This research report from the Center for Digital Thriving, Common Sense Media, and Hopelab examines how teens and young adults (ages 14 to 22) use and think about generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). The study explores findings from two surveys that included questions about participants’ demographic information, purpose of usage, frequency, and perspectives on the future of AI. The key findings show that the majority of young adults do not use GenAI on a daily basis and that they may hold concerns about the loss of jobs, intellectual property theft, misinformation, and privacy. Further, young adults of different racial and gender identities, and sexual orientations, have varying reasons for using or not using GenAI. Lastly, the report concludes with reflective insights from young adults about their actual uses of GenAI. This report may be valuable for educators, researchers, and policymakers, who are interested in exploring the complex perspectives of diverse young adults' GenAI use and concerns.
