Surviving the First Year: The “Productive Struggle” of Mentorship Video

Jillian Degan and Amelia Ellison
December 2025 | Southern Regional Education Board

This ~45-minute podcast episode from the Southern Regional Education Board explores the experiences of a teacher resident and mentor participating in a paid residency model through the Georgia Residency for Educating Amazing Teachers Grant. Throughout the episode, both participants reflect on how they developed a strong mentoring relationship within the classroom. The teacher resident discusses the challenges of entering the profession and highlights the value of learning classroom management, instructional practices, and curriculum planning alongside an experienced mentor teacher. The mentor teacher, in turn, describes the residency model as a form of reciprocal mentorship in which both individuals learn from one another through ongoing collaboration and reflection. The episode concludes with practical suggestions for mentoring new teachers, including the importance of balancing “productive struggle” with clear, supportive feedback. This resource may provide educator preparation programs and district partners with a useful example of how strong mentoring relationships within teacher residencies can support candidate growth, professional learning, and shared development for both mentors and residents.
