October 2016 | Center for Minority Serving Institutions

This report from the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) presents findings from four case studies of MSIs, all with a strong record of preparing students in teacher education. The report illuminates how these representative institutions contribute to the preparation of teachers of color. Their study found that these MSIs:

  1. used proactive recruitment strategies;
  2. engaged in a range of retention strategies;
  3. experimented with fast-tracking programs and building partnerships and pathways;
  4. integrated critical discussions of diversity and equity into their coursework;
  5. maintained close and reciprocal relationships with local school districts and the larger surrounding communities;
  6. recognized that what is learned in teacher education programs must be aligned with current standards and classroom practices; and
  7. incorporated service learning and engagement in local organizations.
