This policy brief published by the Center for the Transformation of Schools at the University of California, Los Angeles, explores the challenges of recruiting and retaining teachers of color due to federal funding shortages. It provides an overview of key federal grants that have been eliminated, specifically the Teacher Quality Partnerships program and the Supporting Effective Educator Development grant program. Reviewing the impacts of the elimination of these programs, the policy brief centers the urgency of implementing alternative grants or similar programs to support overlooked areas in teacher education, such as rural teacher candidates from low socioeconomic backgrounds and diverse communities. The brief also discusses the ways in which funding cuts will impact pathways to teacher certification, calling for policy changes at the federal and state levels.
