This research brief from EdResearch for Action provides a comprehensive literature review of evidence-based practices that schools can use to support youth mental health. Recognizing that schools are primary access points for youth, the brief identifies the major barriers to providing mental health care and provides suggestions for preventive and comprehensive support. Barriers include staffing shortages and funding constraints, as well as challenges with mental health support identification processes. The brief suggests that schools prioritize school-based health centers, collaborate within the school and community to improve access, and ground practices in students’ lived experiences to address specific needs. The brief concludes that effective school-based mental health support requires coordinated systems, sustained investment, and partnerships that make services accessible, responsive, and integrated into students’ daily school experiences.
