Plyler v. Doe at 40–Schooling Guaranteed for Immigrant Children Video
This 55-minute video interview from the Intercultural Development Research Association features the former Director of Policy at IDRA who testified in one of the Plyler v. Doe cases in Texas. The speaker discusses the history of the case in bringing about the Supreme Court ruling that made it unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th amendment for public schools to deny enrollment based on immigration status. The interview highlights the importance of education stakeholders, such as local and state policymakers as well as school and district leaders, to continue to preserve these protections for students. Recommendations include sustaining safe and inclusive school environments for students and teachers, investing in early childhood and bilingual education programs, and ensuring that school staff are well-informed about the rights of students and their families.
