Learner Agency with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Guidelines 3.0: Strategies for Empowering Students Video

Bryan Dean, Susan Shapiro, and Kelli Suding
September 2024 | Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST)

This ~60-minute webinar, hosted by the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST), shares how the updated Universal Design for Learning (UDL) 3.0 guidelines support learner agency in the classroom. As educator preparation increasingly considers more student- and learner-centered pedagogical approaches, this webinar offers a relevant perspective for current discussions in the field. The speakers explore the UDL framework (representation, expression and action, and engagement), providing examples from teachers and lessons to demonstrate its use. Further, the webinar discusses the importance of accessibility through assistive technologies, emphasizing the need for instructors to design lessons that offer assistive technologies and integrate their use purposefully. For teacher educators, the UDL guidelines webinar may be a helpful multimedia resource in supporting PreK–12 teachers’ understanding of the connection between lesson design and learner agency.
