Integrating Reading Foundations: A Tool for College Instructors of Pre‑Service Teachers
This tool from the Regional Educational Laboratory Southeast at Florida State University for the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences is an instructional tool designed to help college instructors strengthen pre-service teachers' knowledge of evidence-based reading instruction. It responds to ongoing concerns about the quality of foundational reading instruction in the primary grades and the preparation teachers need to support students in developing essential reading skills. Built around the companion What Works Clearinghouse practice guide's four research-based recommendations, the tool's twelve lesson cycles cover academic language, sound-to-letter awareness, decoding, and daily reading of connected text. Each lesson pairs explanatory content, guided practice, demonstration videos, and observation logs for pre-service teachers. Teacher preparation faculty can use this tool to deliver evidence-based early reading instruction to pre-service teachers. Teachers and teacher leaders can draw on its lessons and videos to strengthen their own foundational reading practice and mentoring.
