Inquiry Into Practice I: Developing a Theory of Action Syllabus

Katie Weisberg and Steven Chambers
January 2022 | High Tech High Graduate School of Education

This syllabus from the High Tech High Graduate School of Education for EDU 670 is the first in a series of courses focused on the development of a leadership improvement project. The course was designed to assist students’ understanding of the principles and tools of human-centered design and continuous improvement by asking them to gain a deeper understanding of the root causes contributing to an issue and construct a preliminary theory of action for addressing it in collaboration with colleagues and students. As an example syllabus from a series of deeper-learning-focused courses in a leader preparation program, it provides a helpful example for leader educators. The course includes a distinct focus on collaboration with colleagues and communities as leader candidates engage in a project based learning model.
