This brief from the Grable Foundation and Remake Learning documents how 34 public school districts in Western Pennsylvania pursued educational transformation through the Western Pennsylvania Learning 2025 Alliance. Responding to challenges that included declining enrollment, stagnant funding, contested standards, and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, participating districts received $32,500 Tugboat Grants to develop and implement locally driven approaches to change. Their efforts spanned six themes: student well-being, teacher engagement, learning environments, career exploration and workforce development, student and family engagement, and adoption of the Portrait of a Learner framework. The brief illustrates these themes through examples ranging from animal-assisted interventions and mindfulness programs to redesigned classrooms, project-based learning, e-sports programs, and efforts to increase educator diversity. Collectively, the initiatives demonstrate the different ways districts identified local priorities and translated them into new programs, practices, and learning opportunities.
