Tool

A Guide to Teacher Preparation for Customized Arts Learning

December 2024 | State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education

This toolkit from the State Education Agency Directors of Education provides educators resources to implement arts-based learning opportunities in all grade levels of education. Divided into three parts, the toolkit offers concrete strategies and learning tools for educators to 1) engage in self-reflection of their own cultural and artistic perspectives, 2) foster a deep understanding of students’ cultural backgrounds and communities, and 3) plan customized arts learning opportunities. The resources are comprehensive, ranging from guiding questions for self-reflection, descriptions of arts-based assignments, project outlines and rubrics, and frames to support the alignment of the arts with National Core Arts Standards. The toolkit also emphasizes that educators engage in an iterative process of knowing oneself and one’s students to design culturally relevant arts-based lessons and strategies. Teacher candidates across grade levels and content areas may find this resource useful when exploring diverse methods to promote student engagement and foster culturally sustaining pedagogy.
