Evaluating Math Materials for Equity and Access: Findings from the High-Quality Instructional Materials Learning Partners Coalition

February 2025 | EdTrust–West

This research report, published by EdTrust–West, shares findings of an evaluation of K-8 California math curricula that sought to explore how well the materials aligned with culturally sustaining pedagogy for multilingual learners and students of color. Conducted by experienced K-12 mathematics and multilingual educators, the evaluation focuses on four key features: language mapping, assessment of language development, purposeful collaboration and conversation, and cultural and community funds of knowledge. While the report largely finds that the math curricula offers various supports for multilingual learners, it also shares how instructional leaders can enhance the programs. The areas of adaptation include coherence in language support across a unit, guidance for implementing collaboration, protocols for intentional collaboration, and a deep integration of students’ cultures, experiences, and home languages in curricula materials and assessments. The rubric and recommendations may help guide teacher educators, PreK-12 educators, and administrators strengthen the selection, evaluation, and implementation of high-quality math curricula.
