An Ethics of Artificial Intelligence Curriculum for Middle School Students
This curriculum guide from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab provides middle school students (grades 5–8) with an in-depth understanding of how artificial intelligence (AI) works and its impact on society. The guide includes accessible activities, assessments, teaching tools, and lesson plans to support educators in teaching the mechanics of AI systems. Learning objectives include learning about computer algorithms and their biases, understanding the effects of training data, and recognizing human agency in defining goals for technology. Each activity in the curriculum has pre-made slideshow presentations, handouts, and a teacher guide with suggestions for how to structure the lesson and “teacher talk.” The activities vary by modality, with some “unplugged” activities that do not require students to use computers and others that use YouTube as an example to explore how an algorithm works. Middle school educators of all content areas may find this curriculum useful in developing a comprehensive and critical understanding of AI.
