Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Guidance Handbook
This handbook from the Language and Culture Division at the New Mexico Public Education Department explores a statewide framework for implementing culturally and linguistically responsive (CLR) pedagogy to validate and affirm students’ home cultures and languages to support their academic success. The guide builds upon principles of culturally responsive pedagogy to introduce the CLR framework. The CLR framework focuses on four areas: academic success, cultural integrity, critical consciousness, and equity. Further, the handbook provides guiding questions for teachers to think about how they might implement CLR in their own instructional practices and to inform parent and community collaboration. It also explores CLR in school leadership, providing recommendations for critical self-reflection, high expectations for culturally and linguistically diverse students, and differentiating academic support. Education leaders and teachers may find this resource useful in learning about the CLR framework and engaging with CLR implementation tools differentiated for educators, leaders, schools, and districts.
