Colleges of Education: A National Portrait, Second Edition
This research brief from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education compiles national data from federal and organizational sources to describe U.S. schools, colleges, and departments of education; the work they do; the people who staff and lead them; and the students they enroll. It responds to ongoing concern about the nation's capacity to prepare enough highly skilled, diverse teachers, particularly as undergraduate enrollment in education programs has declined for decades and pandemic-era disruptions further strained the field. The report documents persistent gaps in faculty and student diversity relative to the increasingly non-White PreK–12 population these schools serve. Teacher preparation faculty and program leaders can use the report to benchmark their programs against national enrollment and diversity trends, district leaders to understand the pipeline shaping their hiring, and teachers and teacher leaders to see where they fit in the broader educator workforce.
