Awarding Credit for Prior Learning in Teacher Apprenticeships
This interactive tool from the CEEDAR Center at the University of Florida describes the process of granting credit for prior learning (CPL) in Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Programs (RTAPs) and similar programs in other education professions. This resource supports developing policies and practices for states and institutions of higher education to create a formal process of recognizing and granting credit to apprentices entering RTAPs with relevant prior experience and/or postsecondary coursework. The resource is organized into four sections that discuss key aspects of introducing CPL in RTAPs: 1) co-developing and refining CPL approaches and policies, 2) determining business rules of evaluating CPL, 3) establishing procedures to assess prior learning and experience, and 4) communicating CPL policies and procedures with all partners and key stakeholders. The resource contains detailed considerations and potential structures for programs to support university leadership, teacher education faculty, state and local education agencies, school districts, and educators in their understanding of how to use CPL to increase accessibility to the teacher profession.
