Assessment Literacy Standards: A National Imperative

December 2024 | Michigan Assessment Consortium

This brief, published by the Michigan Assessment Consortium, aims to define assessment literacy objectives for students, families, teachers, administrators, and policymakers. The brief emphasizes the importance of assessment literacy, defined as an in-depth understanding of assessment tools and strategies, types of assessment, purposes for assessment, and the strengths and shortcomings of specific assessment measures. The assessment literacy standards vary by role in the education system: elementary students and their families, secondary students and their families, teachers, building administrators, district administrators, and state and local policymakers. Across various roles, the assessment literacy standards capture the need to understand the processes of intentionally designing, selecting, and administering assessments, as well as understanding and interpreting assessment data. Beyond implementing top-down approaches to assessment literacy, the brief encourages a holistic and participatory approach to building shared knowledge of the purpose of collecting assessment data and ways that data can be used to inform improvements in policy and program development.
