Approaches to Teaching English and Other Modern Languages Syllabus
This syllabus is from a master’s-level teacher education course (EDU 6215) at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. It explores foundational theories of teaching and learning within language education while weaving in practical knowledge about the roles and responsibilities of teachers. Beyond covering language teaching principles, the selection of readings and resources spans the intersection of bilingualism and disability, the impact of social-emotional well-being in language learning, and the benefits and drawbacks of artificial intelligence in classrooms. Further, the syllabus includes suggestions for multimedia and experiential-learning course assignments, modeling alignment between instructional practice at the higher education level and what teacher candidates may adapt in their own teaching practices. One example is offering students multimodal choices in addition to essay writing (audio recordings, visual displays, or arts-based works). The syllabus offers a model for teacher educators to implement a similar course on this topic in their educator preparation programs.
