Approaches to Asset-Based Formative Assessment
This multimodal resource from Futures of Assessment, published by Assessment for Good, offers strategies and frameworks for teacher educators and PreK–12 educators to implement asset-based approaches to formative assessment. The recommendations are showcased through comic strips that model how critical conversations about assessment can take place in teacher-teacher, teacher-student, and student-student settings. For example, one of the recommendations for a multimodal, asset-based approach to assessment is the use of “Learning Accountability Hives,” a concept similar to accountability groups in which students take initiative with tracking their own progress and are given feedback by peers and/or educators. A majority of the recommendations integrate the use of artificial intelligence as a learning and assessment tool that teachers and students can utilize for ongoing and personalized feedback. Furthermore, this resource integrates discussion questions for teacher educators and teachers to grapple with, exploring topics such as how to implement “place-based feedback” or utilize “trusted adults” in the community to support students’ learning.
