AI + Learning Differences Designing a Future with No Boundaries
This report from Stanford Accelerator for Learning examines how artificial intelligence (AI) can support students with learning differences while addressing the risk that AI systems may overlook the learners who could benefit most from them. Grounded in the disability rights principle “nothing about us without us,” the report emphasizes involving people with disabilities in the design and development of AI tools. It describes how AI can help identify areas where students need additional support, strengthen assistive technologies, and improve Individualized Education Plans. The report also demonstrates how inclusive design can benefit a wide range of learners. For example, real-time captioning can support students who are hard of hearing as well as English learners and students with auditory processing challenges. The report offers 12 recommendations that educators, researchers, policymakers, and developers can use to guide the development and use of AI systems that better serve learners with a range of needs and abilities.
