AI Integration Continuum, A Human-Centered Framework for Educator Preparation & Education Systems

August 2026 | The Residency Lab

This framework from The Residency Lab helps educator preparation programs and education systems approach artificial intelligence (AI) integration through a human-centered lens. Rather than focusing on individual AI tools, the AI Integration Continuum considers how educators, programs, and systems make decisions about AI and develop the conditions needed to support its equitable and appropriate use. The framework identifies levels of readiness across five domains, with indicators at both the program and individual levels. An accompanying webinar explains the framework’s development and demonstrates how the indicators can be used for self-assessment, planning, implementation, and continuous improvement. Educator preparation faculty can use the continuum to assess current practices, identify areas for growth, and strengthen AI-related expectations and supports across courses and programs. The framework can also provide a shared reference point for faculty and partners to discuss priorities, assess progress, and determine next steps.
