This article published in the Racial Justice in Multilingual Education journal presents the concept of “Black placemaking” through the creation of a virtual reality gaming platform, AfroMetaverse. Rooted in a framework that values endurance, belonging, and resistance for Black students, AfroMetaverse reimagines the role of technology in the learning process of history, language, and culture. AfroMetaverse serves as a globally connected platform for Black youth across the Americas to interact across languages and cultures while learning about Afrodescendant history. Both the article and the multimedia resource provide an overview of how students, educators, and teacher educators can utilize virtual reality to implement an experiential learning experience that is culturally responsive and helps build community. For teacher educators, AfroMetaverse is an example of technologically advanced interdisciplinary work across history, sociology, and linguistics that teacher educators can engage with and expand upon. Students and teachers may find this resource helpful in developing language, literacy, and history knowledge.
